A two-day hike straddling the border with Trentino-Alto Adige, the former border between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire during the First World War. The ridges we’ll traverse offer numerous reminders of that period in our history: high-altitude flowers, scree slopes, and the splendid, fortified and rugged Ercavallo peak. An exciting two-day hike!
SCHEDULE:
DAY 1: PONTE DI LEGNO – RIFUGIO BOZZI
We’ll depart from Pontedilegno and ascend to the Tonale Pass by cable car. From there, we’ll head towards the western Tonale peak and, riding the ridge that divides the Tonale Pass from the Viso Valley, we’ll reach the Contrabbandieri Pass. From here, we’ll make an easy and panoramic descent to the A. Bozzi refuge, where we’ll spend the night.
LENGTH: approximately 12.0 km
ELEVATION GAIN: +900 m
DIFFICULTY: MEDIUM
TIME: 6 hours
DAY 2: RIFUGIO A. BOZZI – CASE DI VISO
Upon awakening, after a hearty breakfast, we’ll head towards the Forcellina del Montozzo pass and from there towards Cima Ercavallo. From the summit, you can enjoy an exceptional, aerial view of the entire Adamello-Presanella mountain range.
We set off again towards the Ercavallo plain, crossing the ruins of the military village perched below the peak. The descent follows a path that winds across rocky terrain with a characteristic reddish color due to the iron content of the rocks. Once we reach the Ercavallo plain, we can enjoy a break on the shores of the lakes that populate the beautiful valley. From this point, the descent continues towards the Viso Valley and its characteristic cluster of mountain huts.
From here, you can continue on foot to Pontedilegno or take advantage of the convenient public transportation.
